Description
Giovanni Pascoli (1855 - 1912)
Giovanni Pascoli was born December 31, 1855 in San Mauro di Romagna from a family of rural bourgeoisie . His father, Ruggero, was factor of the estate La Torre, owned by the Princes Torlonia.
Giovanni was the fourth of ten children. The peaceful life of this family , however, was devastated by a tragedy destined to mark deeply the existence of the poet : August 10, 1867 , Ruggero Pascoli was gunned down . The death of the father created economic difficulties that the family had to move first in the house and then to Rimini.
Within few years, the first mourning, was followed by others : his mother died , his older sister , brothers Luigi and Giacomo.
Giovanni graduated in 1882 and immediately began his career as a teacher before in Matera and then Massa. In 1895 , Pascoli obtained the chair of Greek grammar and Latin at the University of Bologna and in this city took over his master Giosuè Carducci in the teaching of Italian literature.
On April 6, 1912 he died in Bologna, but his remains rest in Castelvecchio Barga where he had transferred his residence .
